January 11, 2010

Hey,
I decided to do another e-mail I'm tired of writing. Seems like all I do is write. Anyway I have a good story about crossing the border. President Cortez went to Mexico for the past month. This past week he and his wife, two boys and baby girl started their drive back to the United States. A drive that would take 4 days. The other day President Cortez told us of the journey. He started at 2:00 in the morning and headed north. In his whole journey he slept for one and a half hours a day, during his four day drive. In Mexico there is alot of problems. The gangs are so out of control that they basically do what they want. Same with the police. There is little safety there. There are stories of people being killed and left naked on the streets after they have been robbed. The gangs look for cars that have US plates. Pres Cortez had Washington. In his drive he was stopped by four armed officers. They made him and his family get out of the car. They looked through everything and stole some of his things. One of them took his wallet and stole his cards, and money. While the others were getting ready to take the car, the officer that had his wallet saw Pres. Cortez temple recommend. The officer stopped and paused. Then told the other officers to get out of the car. Then the officer said to Pres. "get in your car and leave." They would have left him and his family there in the street but thankfully they let them go. Not only with there luggage and car, but there lives. They stole six hundred dollars and that was it. He has been blessed and watched over. He said once he got into the US he and his wife started to cry. They could just feel how free and protected they were. Sometimes we take for granted what we have. I don't have too much more time to write but we had a good week, we have two families on date for the 30th and one of them is Juan Conales and Gigi, one of his daughters, that I taught in Warden. I love you all and talk to you next week.
Love Elder Garrett
